Abstract The purpose of this paper is to summarize the present state-of-the-art in computational mathematical programming. An attempt is made to characterize the actual trends in developing algorithms and software. The author is aware that all statements represent only his subjective point of view and that for many subtopics a more detailed analysis may be necessary. Specific emphasis is given on model building and intelligent software systems since they play a more and more important role when fitting a practical problem to an abstract mathematical notation, and when transforming a mathematical problem into a computationally solvable form, i.e. a computer program.
