Abstract Health impact assessment of active transportation is a valuable tool to promote, assess and maximize the benefits of active transportation for health promotion and prevention. This chapter summarizes the recent evidence related to health impact assessment in the context of active transportation, describing the key factors to be considered when a plan, program or policy focuses on active transportation. Health impact assessment steps are outlined in this chapter highlighting the aspects that need to be taken into account in an active transport context. This chapter describes health determinants (i.e. physical activity, air pollution, traffic incidents, etc.), health outcomes, qualitative and quantitative assessments, participatory processes, monitoring and evaluation approaches and policy contexts related to active transportation. The chapter also presents how health impact assessment can be used by stakeholders especially for policy makers to improve active transportation interventions. This chapter finalizes by summarizing the future of health impact assessment in active transportation.
