Abstract Energy demand is rapidly increasing due to industrialization and re-establishment of technology. Coal has been used as huge fuel resource for power generation and process heating. However, direct combustion of coal has always been the main reason for polluting climate. Coal gasification is an alternate technology to produce heat and meet energy demand with complete conversion of carbon into a combustible gas called synthesis gas. In the present study, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis of updraft gasifier with coal as fuel has been performed. Euler–Lagrange approach is used to describe the global gasification process. The present numerical study is carried out based on the geometrical model of gasifier used for industrial purposes manufactured by Radhe Renewable Energy Development Pvt. Ltd situated in Rajkot, Gujarat. ANSYS Fluent has been used for the present CFD simulations. The boundary conditions for the present simulation have been taken from the ceramic industry with the gasifier in working condition. Effect of equivalence ratio (ER) is studied on the output component of syngas. Results show decreasing of carbon monoxide component in syngas by increasing value of equivalence ratio because the higher value of ER leads to complete combustion of coal.
