The recent trends on Simultaneous Localization and Navigation (SLAM) technique have been applied on autonomous vehicle are being explained in this paper. With the growing interest in self-driving cars, the probabilistic model-based SLAM technique has gained pace in recent years. The SLAM has been considered as a low cost and robust technique which involves in obtaining the map of the environment and determining the position of the vehicle. Moreover, with the inherent disadvantages in the classical approach of localization like Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), SLAM has been considered as an efficient solution for autonomous vehicle navigation. This paper attempts to give a detailed understanding of probabilistic SLAM technique, and a comparison of estimation capabilities of various SLAM techniques. Since SLAM techniques are on the basis of probability theory, therefore it is difficult to give exact position of the vehicle. Due to this, a rough evaluation of the model has been presented that will ameliorate the position in accuracy.
