Abstract The aim of the paper is to present the status of the European Satellite Navigation Programme, Galileo, and to introduce activities planned for the future. The Galileo programme will deploy a complete satellite navigation infrastructure under civil control, which will strengthen the robustness of satellite navigation services. The EGNOS system, soon becoming operational, will act as a precursor for Galileo services. The framework that is being put in place will lead to a true commercial and business-oriented approach, insuring the economic viability of the infrastructure. It also allows new sectors to consider the efficient use of Galileo in their own applications.
