Wireless sensor network for automatic meter reading system has fixed topology, change of the network is small and the energy consumption is relatively insensitive to other WSN, according to these features, most of the traditional MAC protocol does not apply to this network. Take the characteristics of residential automatic meter reading system into consideration and based on the strong edge coloring of graph theory, this paper presents a distributed slot allocation algorithm. The algorithm achieves to assign different time slots for nodes within two-hop in a distributed way, which solves the "hidden nodes" problem of wireless sensor network, assures the successful communication of no conflict and makes the protocol possible to be applied in the network later. Simulation shows that the algorithm can finish the slot assignment quickly and accurately.
