Abstract Sometimes, data are acquired so rapidly that we are perplexed by equally plausible but contrary explanations. The following story from the Sufi tradition comes to mind. A father and his young son are walking in the warm air of a summer evening when the son remarks, “Father, are not those two moons beautiful?” The father, somewhat dismayed, replies, “Son, I’m sorry, there is only one moon. You must be seeing double.” The son, “But father, I could not be seeing double — if that were so there would be four moons.”
