The introduction of real driving emission measurements increases the need for improved transient engine behavior while keeping the emissions minimum. The downsizing of direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines using a turbocharging system leads to delayed torque build-up at transient operation (also known as turbo lag). The turbo lag origins in the lack of mass flow through the turbine or too low exhaust gas enthalpy in front of the turbine to operate the turbine in areas with high efficiency.
