Abstract In this paper, we study the optimal power allocation for energy efficiency maximization in cooperative energy harvesting enabled relay networks with time power switching relaying (TPSR) protocol. In particular, we develop channel capacity and total power consumption expressions in terms of power splitting (PS) and time switching (TS) coefficients by using TPSR protocol in the considered network. We formulate an optimization problem and then apply a power control technique to solve our formulated problem. Subsequently, we extend our study to a multiple-relay scheme, where the best relay is selected from the available multiple relays. We then propose a Max-Min relay selection scheme. Our simulation results show that the energy efficiency maximization using TPSR protocol outperforms the energy efficiency maximization using both the PS-based and TS-based relaying protocols.
