In order to reduce pollutant emissions from the shipping industry and improve the energy efficiency of ships, international agencies have issued strict maritime policies. Practitioners also conduct a lot of research in decarbonization and emission reduction in the shipping industry. As a product of the transitional stage development, hybrid propulsion technology plays a great role in making up for the lack of development of new energy forms at this stage. At the same time, it can provide a reference for future ship development. This study discusses the disadvantages of single new energy propulsion systems and illustrates the advantages of hybrid propulsion technology for ships in terms of energy efficiency, emission reduction and coordinated energy utilization. Finally, the outlook of future ship development is given under the perspective of hybrid power.
