The function of transportation is to overcome spatial distances at certain monetary and non-monetary costs. Thus, means of transport enable and influence the development opportunities of spatial use and differentiated activities for commercial and private purposes, as every form of transport implies different levels of costs and spatial availability. In addition, transport in Europe is a huge sector in industry, which means it is of great socio-economic importance. More specifically, road transport, by far the dominant form of transportation, is of the greatest socio-economic importance.
