Freight transportation is an important part of urban transportation system and contributes to pollution, traffic congestion, infrastructure damage, etc. This paper presents a tour chain-based approach to modelling urban commercial vehicle daily activity patterns of Kozhikode district. A daily tour chain refers to a sequence of tours made by a vehicle in a day. Latent class analysis is used to cluster individuals based on their unobserved heterogeneity. Tour patterns are modelled with Multinomial logit model for cluster-based data and whole data. In which cluster-based data is outperformed. Results of study indicated that host of factors including operator, vehicle, commodity and tour characteristics affect choice of tour chain strategy with good prediction accuracy and correlation value.
