Abstract The first satellite Engineering Test Satellite I (ETS-I) of National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA) was launched in 1975. ETS-I was a small satellite of only 85 kg. But, since then, the satellite mass has been increasing year by year, and the performance of the launch vehicle has been increasing too. Now, the mainstream of satellite research and development in NASDA is for the over 1 tonne-class satellite. But, 50 kg-class micro-satellites and under 10 kg-class nano-satellites are also researched. Larger satellites may well have high performance, but they are not always better, because: No one can comprehend all the systems and subsystems of a large satellite, because it is too complex The large satellite will be expensive The development time will be too long. Thus, in the last six years, NASDA has developed a micro-satellite (µ-Lab Sat 1) and a nano-satellite (within (µ-Lab Sat 2) which are described briefly here.
