The development of vehicular communication networks paves the way for providing data services to vehicles on the road. Conventional vehicular networks focus on vehicle-to-vehicle or vehicle-to-infrastructure communications to share safety-related information. In recent development, onboard applications have become more advanced and diversified, such as autonomous driving, onboard entertainment, argument reality services, etc. Connecting vehicles and infrastructure to enable those novel applications motivates the advance of the Internet of vehicles (IoV). In this chapter, we first provide the background of IoV by examining its concept and enabling technologies. Then, some IoV use cases are presented. We also discuss the characteristics and challenges of IoV, and intelligent resource management solutions are required to cope with these challenges. Last, we outline the scope and organization of this monograph.
