The open-loop and feedforward controlFeedforward control problems for nonlinear systems are introduced in this chapter. These have an important role in applications and they provide a useful starting point for considering nonlinear systems. The optimization process is similar to that needed in most chapters but is much simpler in this linear case. The design lessons learned in the following for optimal nonlinear controllers are related to the well-known classical control design approaches. Implementation issues are also considered and the example at the end of the chapter illustrates the types of design steps and the results obtained.
