Car parking systems have been very useful in helping to reduce traffic congestion caused as a result of haphazard parking of vehicles along road ways. Parking a vehicle is simply the act of leaving the vehicle in a particular location for a period of time. It is a common practice for vehicles to be parked along road ways, especially in urban areas where there are not enough parking spaces. This work, therefore presents the development of a smart multi-level car parking system prototype. The developed system is aimed at proffering solution to the problem of inadequate car parking space, traffic congestion, and the insecurity of drivers and their vehicles. The developed smart multi-level car parking system prototype consists of a multi-level car park, and a storage and retrieval system. The frame of the designed multi-level car park was fabricated with mild steel and assembled with bolts and nuts. The storage and retrieval system was made with threaded rods, ball-bearing slides, D.C. stepper motors, nuts and sleeves coupled on the systems frame by drilling and welding. Tests were carried out on the hardware components of the automated multi-level car parking system to ensure that the motor driver circuit and infrared proximity sensor operate optimally.
