This case study presents how Deutsche Bahn has opened its carsharing IT-platform used by Flinkster to third party carsharing service providers offered by car rental companies, automotive companies and a multitude of regional and international carsharing organisations all located within Germany. This multi-tenant platform concept enables Flinkster to offer a nation-wide carsharing service that operates in more than 140 cities and gives customers access to carsharing offers in other European countries. It is also an enabler for multi-modal mobility solutions, which combine carsharing with rail and other public transport services for tourists visiting a destination. The article provides insights into this network concept and its various functions from a customer as well as a partner perspective. It is a good example of how the platform strategy supports co-creation and collaborative consumption, as well as innovation processes in open tourism.
