Automated driving is supposed to alleviate drivers’ workloads and improve traffic efficiency and road safety. Still, in order to achieve these goals, it is crucial to test the automated systems thoroughly. Since pure testing on test tracks and real roads is highly time consuming and still cannot cover merely all critical scenarios, usage of simulation and driving simulators can be a way to speed up the testing process. The TrustVehicle project aims at improving SAE Level3 automated driving (L3AD) functionalities, especially in critical situations and under harsh weather conditions. Therefore, co-simulations, driving simulator and real-world tests are used to test the trustworthiness and availability of the developed functionalities. The use cases therein cover exact low-speed maneuvering on construction sites and in urban environments, as well as medium speed applications for rural roads, where also various types of vehicles (truck-trailers, light commercial vehicles, electric buses and passenger cars) are investigated. In addition to safety and reliability considerations, the presented approach also allows for end-user feedback already in the development process.
