Abstract Only 28 months elapsed between James Webb approving the Boeing contract for Lunar Orbiter and the first mission. It had been hoped to launch on 11 July 1966, but Eastman Kodak was late in delivering the photographic system and the launch was rescheduled for 9 August. At the Cape, the Air Force made available Hangar S for the project. The photographic system was installed on 1 August, and the next day the spacecraft was mated with its Atlas-Agena D on Pad 13. At this point, a Deep Space Network facility at the Cape verified the spacecraft’s communication system.
