Abstract A new method of optical pumping has been applied to increase the power of the Ti:Sapphire laser system of the FURIOS laser ion source, Jyväskylä. This upgrade has led to a factor of two improvement in the output power, and has been directly employed in the first off-line laser ionisation tests on the long-lived refractory isotope 99Tc. In the future further studies will be done to determine the efficiency of this ionisation scheme and to employ it for on-line experiments.
