We have gone as far as the current data takes us regarding the scale, timing, and risks of the potential new lunar commerce businesses. Some of them would be offshoots of already existing terrestrial companies; others would be entirely new entrepreneurial operations. Some would require knowledge of operating in space; others not so much. They will potentially be from a wide array of countries on Earth. There will have to have been international agreements set in place to enable the activities to take place (to be discussed in Part IV). There will be a mixture of governmental and true commercial customers for the products and services. The sectors we have described would have enabled a sustainable way for folks to live and work on the Moon, and not be dependent on deliveries from Earth. They (the lunar inhabitants and visitors) would be effectively autonomous. This would be the first time that we have imagined an “off-Earth” commercial ecosystem, and so we should try to foresee how that situation might impact life, and business, on Earth. What might be the implications? What might be the impact on traditional economic activities on Earth of having this lunar economy?
