This paper examines the mode-coupling characteristics of a rigid brake pad. The brake pad is modelled as a composite annular sector plate which is subject to frictional contact with a rotating disc. The frequency loci crossing of the statically coupled frequencies is analytically presented. This paper verifies theoretically that mode-coupling instability can occur near frequency loci crossing, which is approximately estimated by the geometric formulae. It is found that mode-coupling instability is induced by the modal interaction between two rotation modes and its propensity is associated with the mode crossing of these two modes.
