This paper discusses the use of three-phase traction on coaches used by the Madrid Underground. The a.c. drive is already in service with urban and inter-urban passenger railways. Once all the technical problems and likely interferences are sorted out, this technology appears to be competitive, profitable, simple, reliable and has overhauling advantages. 170 a.c. drive cars run on the Madrid Underground with very satisfactory experience.
