The hybrid electric vehicle (HEVs) is an alternative to reduce the high dependence on petroleum products, because maintains the characteristics attributed to conventional vehicles such as performance, safety and trustworthiness and reduced the fuel consumption. Some modifications are necessary in the vehicle longitudinal dynamics equationing, to provide a specific power management control system, because of the electrical power source addition that complements the conventional engine and powertrain system. In this paper is used the HEV parallel configuration, where both drive systems are directly connected to the vehicle wheels, maintaining the engine/powertrain in the front wheels and electric motors directly coupled to the rear vehicle wheels. The aim of this study is the evaluated the HEV drive system performance and fuel consumption by means of co-simulation between the softwares Adams™ where is located the multibody vehicle model and Matlab/Simulink™ where has developed a power management algorithm based on heuristic control techniques. The Brazilian standard NBR 6601 urban driving cycle was used to represent the driver behavior, and evaluate the vehicle performance as compared to the standard velocity profile. The results are compared with a conventional 1.0L vehicle simulation observing the changes in the engine fuel consumption map and vehicle performance.
