Electric pressure regulator is considered as one of the key components of the fuel system, which relates to fuel distribution as well as the operating performance of the engine. In order to examine the operating characteristics of an electric pressure regulator used for compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle, a simulation study is conducted using mathematical models combined with Maxwell software. The mathematical models including a mechanical model and an electrical model are built to describe the operation of the electric pressure regulator based on the specifications of an actual electric pressure regulator. In addition, the electric pressure regulator is also modeled and simulated using Maxwell software, in which a 2D symmetric model of the electric pressure regulator is created in Maxwell to save computational cost. The dimension parameters and material properties of the 2D symmetric model are based on the specifications of the actual electric pressure regulator. The purpose of simulating in Maxwell is to find out the optimum electromagnetic force based on the change of structural parameters of the electric pressure regulator such as core shapes, which contributes to improving the dynamic response of the electric pressure regulator. The optimum electromagnetic force is then used as one of the input variables for the mathematical models which are solved by Matlab-Simulink to calculate the dynamic response characteristics of the electric pressure regulator. To provide information for this study, effects of key parameters such as spring stiffness, orifice diameter and inlet gas pressure on the operating characteristics of electric pressure regulator are investigated. The simulation results show that a high performance electric pressure regulator could be easily obtained by optimizing the mentioned key parameters.
