The reliability engineering organization’s responsibility to establish realistic performance objectives, taking into consideration the state of the art and economic factors which must be imposed on the design are discussed. Recognition is given to the fact that a state of the art reliability barrier exists; beyond this barrier lies an area of higher reliability that can only be achieved through research and other special considerations.Observations are also made with respect to the areas of engineering, manufacturing and maintenance and the reliability capabilities which may be prompted by their activities. The responsibility of the design engineer and his relationship to the reliability organization and possible definition of the reliability organization’s responsibilities are also discussed.
