The research program on combustion developed by Renault Vehicules Industriels in the scope of their Advanced Research Plan has resulted in implementation of very efficient calculation and analysis means for better understanding of combustion phenomenon as well as for speeding up engine development.Major means implemented are:.A Code for combustion analysis by going through instant measurement recorded on engine by data retrieval.A Code for simulating fuel spray penetration based on an assumption of air entrainment allowing to visualize spray path within the chamber and to know the entrained airflow and the species within the spray.Calibrated on long lasting test campaigns on single and multicylinder engines, this work resulted in development of combustion simulation phenomenological models, taking into account heterogeneity of temperatures and concentrations. These models are already predictive ones as regards performance and heat transfer, and allow to take up simulation of gaseous emissions formation (hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and smokes).
