This paper discusses a practical method of analyzing field failure data on complex mechanical components to determine: the existence of a constant failure rate, the start of wearout, the relationships of average operating costs and failure rates to overhaul periods, and the optimizing of overhaul periods. The significant reduction in cost per hour resulting from this analysis is illustrated.Field failure data is presented to show that the constant failure rate does in fact exist on complex mechanical components and that the method presented does have a practical application.
