In 2016, efforts to implement cross-cutting technologies from across industries to create Smart Cities gained traction. Fueled in many ways by the US Department of Transportation's Smart City Challenge, the transportation industry's Smart City movement is beginning to move from a technological focus on big data, information technology, and intelligent transportation systems to a more people-based approach that views the technology as an enabler to support access to jobs and a way to create more livable communities. Within ITE, the term Smart Communities has emerged as we have recognized the human element that goes beyond the technology needed to support a Smart City. Smart Communities were identified as one of the ITE International Board's initiatives for 2017 during the January 2017 Board of Direction meeting.
