This article proposes a novel adaptive fuzzy controller for shunt active power filters. The main fuzzy controller operated with the auxiliary fuzzy controller is called the adaptive fuzzy controller. This controller can perfectly control the compensating currents for any harmonic loads in the system. A new approach to design the auxiliary fuzzy controller without the engineering experiences is presented; moreover, the synchronous detection with Fourier method for harmonic detection is also proposed. A proportional and integral controller is used for the DC bus voltage control of shunt active power filter. The eZdsp TM f28335 board (Spectrum Digital Incorporated, Stafford, Texas, USA) is the main processor in the system. The experimental results of harmonic elimination can confirm good performance of the adaptive fuzzy controller designed by the new approach operated with the synchronous detection with Fourier method. Furthermore, the average value for the percent of total harmonic distortion of the source currents after compensation is satisfied under IEEE Standard 519-1992 [1].
