The field of hypersonic vehicle thermal protection is described from its beginning to the significant advancements that have been made in developing materials and systems used for thermally protecting vehicles which enter transit atmospheres. These include launch vehicles, entry and hypersonic vehicles, and planetary entry spacecraft, which as a group can be called transatmospheric vehicles which travel through the atmospheres of Earth and other planets at hypervelocities, with Mach numbers ranging from 5 to 50.
