Field of view and/or field of obscuration of optical or other instrument not built yet illustrated by use of computer-aided-plotting method. Based on assumption that structure in which instrument to be mounted, any nearby equipment blocking part of view, and possibly instrument itself are objects of computer-aided-design effort, so computer files of all relevant design data available. Program used to project objects in design-data file onto reference sphere. Resulting perspective picture, including latitude-and-longitude grid, then mapped into picture file in one of three projection formats: standard equal distance, equal area, or cosine weighted. Picture file then used to make polar plot of field of view.
