The report presents the findings of a project to assess the status of medical review practices in U.S. and Canadian administered driver licensing programs. Two categories of drivers, older drivers and drivers of large commercial vehicles, received considerable attention in this study. The report is divided into three sections following a statement of the problem: (1) driver licensing procedures and practices, (2) the organization and functions of medical programs including medical advisory boards, and (3) an overview of current medical standards and guidelines. Also included are descriptions of individual jurisdiction programs and an annotated bibliography of relevant studies.
