An instrumented HSS-1 helicopter was flown in the vicinity of nuclear detonations to measure helicopter response to overpressure and gust and to determine the delivery capabilities of the HSS-1 for antisubmarine warfare as limited by blast effects. Measurements of overpressure and resulting stresses were obtained. Comparisons are shown of experimental gust response data obtained during these HSS-1 tests with prediction of helicopter gust response made possible by employing a six-degrees-of-freedom analysis of helicopter stability and control characteristics and maneuvering loads. Comparison of experimental fuselage stresses with analytical predictions are presented to show the accuracy of the stress analysis methods employed for determination of fuselage response to overpressure. The primary objective of the project was achieved to a certain extent. (Author)
