The 5-55C Meteoroid Satellite was successfully launched from Wallops Island, Virginia, on November 6, 1964 at 7:02 AM EST. Orbital elements very close to those desired were achieved by excellent performance of Scout launch vehicle No. 133, The Meteoroid Satellite has been designated Explorer XXIII. All spacecraft systems are performing properly with good temperature control and very good telemetry signal strength. The primary detectors are recording as expected. (Two punctures were recorded for 2 mil stainless steel during the first five days.) One of the three secondary detectors, the cadmium sulfide cells, failed at the time of shroud ejection and the cause is being investigated, Further details are contained in the enclosed Post Launch Report No. 1 which should be filed following the cover page of the basic Report No. R-713-64-04 dated October 28, 1964.
