Japanese Earth Resources Satellite-1 (JERS-1) is a geophysical observatory satellite developed for survey of natural resources as well as for observation of landscapes and disasters. It is a joint project of the National Space Development Agency and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry; the former takes charge of development of the satellite structure, system tests, launching, tracking control, and data receiving, and the latter develops mission devices. The satellite utilizes synthetic aperture radar (SAR) using L band, optical sensor (OPS) for short wave infrared observation, and a mission data recorder (MDR), all of which will show unique characteristics in global coverage, especially for lithologic mapping. The satellite structure has a system for energy supply and thermal and attitude control which is an accumulation of the latest techniques. The JERS-1 is scheduled to be launched in February 1992. The development was started in 1986 and the prototype was completed on the basis of several system development tests. At present, the flight tests are being performed using the prototype, in addition to simultaneous preparation for launch and operation in orbit.
