An evaluation was made of a C-130 dual rail system with a new concept for providing for longitudinal restraint and release capability by the use of aircraft side rail 'detent' arms which engage 'indent' notches in the vertical restraint flange of the Army modular platform side rails. The system is intended to have both logistic and aerial delivery capability in the 88 and 108 inch side rail configuration. The suitability of the Army modular platform used with the rail system was evaluated, as was the capability of the Army modular platform used as a load-bearing platform with weights of 12,000 pounds maximum. Force time histories were obtained in the extraction line on all 13 tests and they were also obtained during parachute deployment and opening in the individual platform suspension slings and at the confluence point between the platform suspension slings and individual recovery parachute risers. Fit testing of the 463L Universal Cargo Handling Rail System for C-130 aircraft established deficiencies prior to activation of the air drop portion of the program. The decision was made to conduct testing under close surveillance of the known defects by the inclusion of locally developed emergency systems and techniques. Testing determined that the rail system was not functionally suitable for operational use. (Author)
