The Spacelab J mission, STS-47, was launched aboard Endeavour on September 12, 1992. The Shuttle landed at the Kennedy Space Center on September 20, 1992, after completing eight successful days of microgravity science and life sciences investigations. All mission objectives were met. In microgravity science, investigations were carried out in the areas of biotechnology, electronic materials, fluid dynamics and transport phenomena, glasses, metals, alloys, and technology. In the life sciences, investigations were conducted in the areas of biotechnology, cell biology, developmental biology, physiology, radiation biology, and technology. Orbiter and Spacelab systems performed well during the mission. A number of experiment hardware anomalies were noted during the mission, but the science impact was minimal. The overall mission was highly successful.
