A taxi speed and distance measuring device was evaluated for accurracy. The device used a modified skid detector assembly as a sensor. The skid detector assembly was mechanically coupled to the aircraft wheel and thus sensed wheel rotation. Accuracy measurements were made on the device and it was found to meet design accuracy specification for distance measurement. In two cases, speed errors occurred which were in excess of the design specification, but it was felt that this would not degrade the operational usability of the speed measuring equipment. The distance measuring portion of the equipment would require modifications to overcome some limitations before the utility of the distance measuring portion of the device in Category III conditions could be investigated.
