The report summarizes the status of two grants activities sponsored by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration (UMTA) in the area of transit fare collection. One grant was awarded to the Chicago Transit Authority to develop an improved magnetic card pass reader system (IL-06-0049). The other grant was awarded to the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad to develop an improved bill validator (IL-06-0052). The grants were parts of an UMTA fare collection program involving rail transit properties, equipment suppliers, and fare collection consultants to improve the effectiveness of fare collection systems that satisfy specific rail transit property needs.
