This report describes the findings of an investigation into the health of the lubricating oil in two Australian Army CH-47D helicopters. One of the aims of this investigation was to assess the applicability of an existing filter patch test kit for lubricating oil in order to provide basic contamination and wear debris information. The information provided by the filter patch test kit would be of particular benefit when aircraft are deployed to remote localities. The filter patch test kit used for this investigation is currently used by the Australian Defence Force to assess hydraulic fluid health. Another aim of this investigation was to assess a number of chemical and physical properties of the oil in order to obtain a better understanding of the oil condition in operational CH-47D helicopters. This investigation also investigated whether certain aspects of the oil's chemical condition could be used to assess the health of the aircraft engines and transmissions.
