In this paper an overview will be presented of the development of the most recent family of so-called 'Velocity Prediction Programs' (VPP). The development of the theory behind the Delft Systematic Yacht Hull Series, an overview of the results and the basic principles of the formulations that are derived from these systematic results. Emphasis will also be placed on the possibilities and limitations of the use of the VPP in predicting the speed and performance of sailing yachts. The possibilities introduced by the incorporation of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the performance prediction will be shown. A number of practical examples will be presented to show the possible use of these VPP's in the design process of sailing yachts.
