The history of the Spacelab project is depicted. The modular construction, the major Spacelab flight elements, flight hardware, flight configurations, and typical missions are described. Frequently occurring errors, which have to be considered by the management, are discussed. The concept of the European Columbus project is outlined. The industrial and management organization of the project are presented.
