Cost-standardized accident rates can be used in assessing the occurrence of accidents on a certain road in comparison with others. Every road is affected by a range of accident types (single vehicle accidents, overtaking accidents, etc). The total cost of accidents on a particular road can be calculated by multiplying each accident by its average cost. It is also possible to calculate the cost of an average accident (normal accident) with regard to all accident types. By dividing the road's accident cost by the cost of a normal accident, the authors can obtain the number of normal accidents corresponding to the accidents on that road. The cost-standardized accident rate will then be the number of normal accidents divided by the vehicle mileage.
