For over five years now, satellite imagery has been one of the data sources used by the SHOM (French Navy Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service) for ocean mapping. With the satellite map of the island of Ouvea, a new stage was completed: the map is based on satellite data. The Spot Preliminary Evaluation Program (PEPS) No. 203 involved satellite mapping of the coral littoral, requiring geometric correction, image quality improvement and bathymetric computations. These methods were applied to the test area of Ouvea and a satellite map of the Ouvea Atoll was drawn up showing the shoreline, foreshore and isobaths with an error of less than 10%; this complemented the data acquired through traditional hydrographic surveys.
