A brief survey is given on the history of product assurance in European space activities, both within ESA and national organizations. In the beginning, the developments were parallel, showed little coordination and were mainly based on American models. In the meantime, however, separate specifications were developed to fit the specific European conditions. The objectives are described which aim at uniform procedures and specifications, and which require cooperation and teamwork. The cooperation between ESA and national organizations covers standardized product assurance documents and procedures for the qualification of components, materials, systems and subsystems; furthermore a direct use of personnel (National Inspectorates) for the industrial control of ESA-contractors as well as the utilization of laboratories and facilities is elaborated.
