An on-the-spot study of traffic incidents on the M1 motorway in Hertfordshire during several weekend peak traffic periods gave information on the types of incident, their probable causes and their effect on traffic. Additional data relating to incident clearance, including detection and response times, were also collected. Several problems connected with motorway incidents have been identified, and a number of proposals for further study are included. (Copyright (c) Crown Copyright 1978.)
