This briefing discuss satellite monitoring of the universal shipborne automatic identification system (ASI) for global maritime traffic monitoring. The briefings give a short overview of the challenges of space- based AIS. Solutions are suggested for the problems of overlapping messages (blurred reception) and the large number of messages in the satellite antenna footprint.
