A variable camber wing system has been designed for high performance fighter and attack airplanes. Analysis derived from theory and wind tunnel test data indicates that variable camber provides substantial improvements in combat capability over existing airplanes. The variable camber system consists of: (1) An advanced aerodynamic technology wing design; (2) A practical mechanism that varies the camber of the advanced technology wing. This camber varying mechanism is unique in that a flexible skin panel is used to provide smooth, continuous (conformal) curved upper surface contours; (3) A flight control system which automatically produces the leading and trailing contours producing the maximum performance advantages; (4) A manual mode which provides a high lift and drag landing configuration; (5) A redundancy level for each of the system elements to provide safe operation; (6) and A design which features battle damage resistant features.
