The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of immersive operant conditioning in the form of repeated exposure to Spatial Disorientation (SD) accident-based flight scenarios on the performance of rated aviators in the recognition and prevention of SD accidents. The study population was comprised of 30 rated UH-60 Black Hawk aviators, recruited from personnel assigned to USAACE, Fort Rucker, AL. Participants were randomized and assigned to one of two groups, experimental or control. The data indicate that conducting scenario-based SD training has an effect on a pilots ability to recognize situations that have led to aircraft accidents in the past. Further, there is an observable change in behavior in order to avoid situations that would likely result in SD accidents in the future. Based on this study, the authors recommend that the Army incorporate accident-based scenarios into continuation training requirements in the flight simulator for aviation personnel. This will aid in the prevention of SD accidents.
